There’s no doubt about it that God is awesome. He is so awesome, in fact, that the statement “God is awesome”, though it may sound like it, is no subjective truth. And if you don’t agree, I am here to prove you otherwise.
Here are some things that God has taught me about Himself that stick out to me.
He Loves Us Unconditionally
Could it be that on my worst days, / How You love me simply will not change? / What if it’s really not about what I do / But what You did?Mercyme, “Wishful Thinking”
“God so loved the world that he gave His one and only son.” That’s a phrase we’ve heard so much that we’ve grown numb to it. But it it such a beautiful truth.
One night, a few years ago, I was crying in my bed in despair thinking, “What’s the point in trying to follow God if I keep getting distracted? What’s the point in trying to break through my sin when it always catches back up to me? “Mercyme’s “Wishful Thinking” was playing in my headphones at the time, and when I heard the lyrics above, I instantly felt a sense of purpose and peace. I was more joyful and grateful than I had been for a long time, and the gratefulness stuck with me for days to come until, fourteen months later, I wrote a poem about it.
This wonderful encounter with God’s love was the inspiration behind Vines.
He Is Infinite and All-Powerful
He is the one who holds the stars in placeAnonymous
He is the one who crafts the galaxy
He knows of everybody’s name and face
The definition of infinity
One night at a retreat, I stepped outside, lay down on my back and stargazed. I found myself trying to comprehend the fact that the Sun is the only star humans will be able to reach. Even if you can travel the speed of light, it is humanly impossible to come even close to the rest of the stars.
And those are just the stars in our own cosmic neighborhood! The Milky Way Galaxy’s radius is 52,850 light years across, and there are still millions of other galaxies out there, billions more light years away from us. If you think the universe is unbearably huge, imagine how huge God must be. He is infinitely huge — utterly boundless. The universe, who-knows-how-many-kajillions of light years large, is puny compared to the One who created it.
He Is a Friend
No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.John 15:15, ESV
Sometimes I find myself talking to God as if we were just a couple friends at a coffee shop catching up with each other. It’s a great feeling, having the Messiah, the King of Kings, as a loving friend. It’s one of my favorite things about prayer, in fact. He’s lofty and superior but also loves fellowship.
He Is Real
He is true, He is real, and He is thereS.F. Dekreel, “Vines”
This is another one of my favorite things about prayer. Oftentimes when I pray to God, I feel as though I were talking to someone right in front of my face, even though it may look like I’m talking to thin air. I sense His presence as if He were actually there, listening to me, which of course He is. It’s fantastic.
He Is Always With Us
As the thunder rolls, / I barely hear a whisper through the rain: / ‘I’m with you.”Casting Crowns, “I Will Praise You In This Storm”
Even in your lowest moments when it seems like nothing and nobody is there to comfort us, God is right there with open arms and with a shoulder to cry on. If you have accepted Christ as your Savior, maybe you’re familiar with the little feeling in your heart you get in the midst of despair that there is still Someone by your side. That feeling isn’t just in your head, it’s God reminding you that He is still there, and He still cares for you no matter what.
There was a time in my own life recently when God’s presence and hope was the only thing stopping me from ending it all. I sensed He had a plan for me, even though I didn’t know what it was, and I knew that He was encouraging me to get back on my feet and keep walking, and He would be with me the whole way.
If I hadn’t known God in that moment, if He weren’t by my side, I might not be here today.
He Is Forgiving
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.Romans 8:1, ESV
Romans 8:1 is among the most soothing verses I’ve ever heard. I heard it for the first time several years ago when my mom quoted it to me, and I instantly felt better.
How is it that God continues to forgive me without fail even when I’m sinning a hundred sins per second? How is it that He forgets my failures and sees me as perfect? It’s one of the hardest truths for me to grasp, especially since I continually condemn myself.
He Has a Sense of Humor
Don’t you just love God’s sense of humor?Dekreel’s diary, 4/7/2019
I may as well leave this on a light, somewhat joyful note, hahah.
One Sunday morning at church, our pastor was talking about the story of the Apostles and the tongues of fire. He started reading from Acts chapter two:
“When the day of Pentecost arrived, [the Apostles] were all together in one place. . .”
He was interrupted by a boom of thunder outside. After everyone settled down, he continued:
“Suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind. . .”
Get it? Needless to say, we all burst into laughter. I love it when God makes us laugh. It’s happened to me more than once, but this is the only story I remember.
So those are seven reasons I think God is awesome. Obviously there are 9,993 more reasons (get the reference?), but mentioning all of them would take quite a while, to say the least.
Do Tell! What are some reasons you love God? Also, do you have any ideas for blog posts besides tags? I’m fresh out.
I hope you enjoyed today’s post! God bless.
