Book Binder Poetry {Dekreel Edition}

I’ve always been a big fan of poetry and beautiful prose in general, and Evelyn’s blog post on what she calls “book binder” poetry is a great example of raw literary aesthetic. I knew immediately that I wanted to follow suit (besides, it looked like SO MUCH FUN.) So I stole drew inspiration from her idea, grabbed a couple armfuls of books from various shelves and tried my hand at composing book binder poetry of my own.

If y’all haven’t read her post on this unique genre of poetry, I highly suggest checking it out. She’s an amazing poet and she did a wonderful job. 🙂

Let’s get started! *rubs paws*

(Disclaimer: I haven’t read every single book I used. And a few of the ones I have read I don’t recommend for the sensitive reader. 😉 )

I spread out two dozen or so books on the living room floor and stared at them intently. I had no idea what I was doing, or where to begin. I tried matching up a few books, but they just weren’t clicking together the way I wanted them to.

Finally, here’s what I came up with.

I mean, it’s a start. . .

Let’s ramp it up a bit, shall we??

After a few more minutes of playing around, I found a more complex combination.

As a matter of fact, Evelyn also used Stepping Heavenward in a couple of her books. I think it’s even the same edition.

Soooo. . . not too bad. What else can I do?

This one nearly made me laugh with delight. I resonated with it. 🙂

At this point I was finally starting to get it. New possibilities were opening up to me.

I like how Quiet Times and Sunrise almost rhymed in that one. Very convenient.

Then I discovered our sleeping cat nearby, sooooooo. . .

That worked out quite nicely. ACCKK MY BEAUTIFUL KITTY. . .

My favorite part about this experience was seeing the puzzle pieces fit together when at first it seemed like none of them would match.

Then I took the comedic route.

Doesn’t that just snap together perfectly though? X’D

. . . Followed by a dramatic detour. . .

I think it’s rather appropriate how Tale of Two Cities, Gone With The Wind and Healer’s Bane all involve dead bodies in a city. I don’t know about the other one though. 😛

I really wish that last one was called “ON This Mountain” instead. That would make everything more logical.

You know what else makes good poetry?

. . . CDs.

There was a collection of them nearby and I realized the potential. So I grabbed handfuls of them and tried a couple.

Those are the only two I’ve done so far. But we have a lot of CDs so I might continue to experiment in the future.

Overall, that was a super fun experience!! I’d recommend it to writers, bookworms and anyone with an appreciation for compelling prose.
